The Doctor of Chiropractic is a primary health care
provider with a duty to properly diagnose each patient. As we
work with each patient on their journey toward vibrant health,
we conduct a thorough history reviewing all organ systems,
accidents, illnesses and family history. We then perform a
physical exam evaluating vital signs, neurologic integrity,
physical capability and a detailed structural exam focusing on
the spine. If warranted, laboratory tests, x-rays or advanced
imaging is ordered.
Most people have heard that chiropractors treat
subluxations. This means a bone that is out of place causing a
joint to not move properly. To correct a subluxation, we
perform an adjustment, a quick, precise thrust with the
correct direction and depth. And because the muscles are what
move the bones, we then address problems with the muscles in
the area. This results in restoration of normal joint movement
and because the nerves pass between or alongside the bones,
relief of irritation to nerves. The word chiropractic comes
from the Greek word meaning hand. Chiropractors use their
hands to treat their patients; we do not use surgery or
drugs.
Nerve irritation can cause pain where the irritation
occurred or farther along the path of the nerve. Because the
nerves to the organs of the body pass between the spinal
vertebrae, nerve irritation can also cause dysfunction in
organs. An example of the connection between the muscles and
the organs, which demonstrates how nerves to organs and
muscles travel together through the body, is a kidney
infection. Everyone knows a kidney infection causes the low
back muscles to tighten. What most people don't know is that
it can work the other way around. A subluxation causing tight
low back muscles can cause kidney irritation.
Removing nerve irritation often has far reaching effects.
In one study, 25% of chiropractic patients who came in for
musculoskeletal complaints, had other health benefits
including improvement with breathing, in digestion, in blood
circulation and in vision.1
